Just got my 5th grader's SC READY (South Carolina College and Career Readiness Assessment) results. The report shows scale scores, performance levels, and some comparative data but I'm struggling to interpret what it actually means for my child's learning.
They scored 'Approaches Expectations' in ELA and 'Meets Expectations' in Math. Is 'Approaches' something to be concerned about and what does it actually mean for middle school readiness?

The SC READY scale score is more informative than the performance level label. A score just below 'Meets' and a score significantly below are very different situations. Ask the school for the scale score to understand how close to the threshold your child is.

Summer reading and targeted math practice (Khan Academy aligned to SC standards) can close an 'Approaches' gap by 6th grade entry in many cases. It's not a crisis but it's worth a focused summer.

'Approaches Expectations' means your child is working toward grade-level standards but hasn't fully met them yet. It's a flag worth taking seriously — specifically ask the teacher what skills are showing as weak so you can support over summer.
