Scoring 1400+ on the SAT — what actually worked after 3 attempts

I took the SAT three times over 14 months and finally hit 1420 last October. My first attempt was 1180, second was 1280, and I honestly didn't think I'd break 1350. The jump from attempt 2 to 3 came from switching how I studied — less passive reading, way more timed practice under actual test conditions.

For math I spent about 6 weeks drilling algebra and advanced functions specifically, roughly 90 minutes a day. Doing SAT Practice Tests under timed conditions is what finally made the pacing feel natural. I went from leaving 4 questions blank to finishing with 5 minutes left every time.

Reading and Writing was trickier. I'd been scoring around 620 and couldn't figure out why I kept missing inference questions. Turns out I was overthinking — the correct answer is almost always directly supported by the passage, not just implied. Once I stopped second-guessing, my accuracy on those went from about 74% to 91% on practice sets.

Anyone else find the digital format less stressful than paper? I actually preferred it. The shorter reading passages made a real difference and having the built-in calculator removed a lot of anxiety for me.

Congrats on the 1420. I'm at 1310 after two attempts and math is killing me. What did you use specifically for advanced functions? Khan Academy or something else? I've been doing the College Board materials but they feel too easy compared to what actually shows up.

How did your practice test scores compare to your actual test day score? I'm hitting 1380-1400 consistently on practice but I'm worried about deflation on the real thing. My test is in 6 weeks and I'm not sure whether to keep drilling new material or just review errors at this point.

The digital format thing is real — having the built-in calculator and being able to flag questions without flipping pages saved me probably 15-20 seconds per section. Test anxiety also felt lower somehow, probably because the interface felt familiar from everyday screen use.

That reading tip is exactly right. I kept picking answers that felt logical but weren't actually supported by the text, and it tanked my score for months. Started underlining direct evidence for every answer I chose and went from 610 to 680 in about 3 weeks of targeted practice.
