CMSP vs other certs in this field — is it worth it salary-wise?

I actually failed the first time by a few points. Total gut punch. But passed on the second attempt with a comfortable margin.

Also switched from reading to doing. Less time with the textbook, more time on practice questions with detailed answer explanations.

A lot of mining ops and contractors treat CMSP as the thing that proves you actually know MSHA regs cold instead of just having sat through the trainings. So whoever said it's more of a door-opener than a raise generator isn't wrong.

One detail that made the difference for me: don't underestimate the regulatory/legal portion. I came in strong on the hazard recognition and ventilation stuff because that's my day job, but the questions on Part 46/48 training requirements and the recordkeeping side tripped me up on the practice runs. I spent the last two weeks just drilling scenario questions and that's what pushed me over. There's a chunk on risk management, industrial hygiene, and accident investigation methodology that bit a lot of people I tested with. The thing that actually made the difference for me was drilling the question format until I stopped overthinking. The scenario questions love to give you two answers that are both technically "correct" and you have to pick the one that's the best practice / most defensible, not just compliant. So worth it? If your employer reimburses or it unlocks a role you're already targeting, yeah, easy yes. If you're paying out of pocket hoping it magically adds money at your current job with no title change — manage your expectations. It opens doors more than it pads the paycheck directly.
