Failed SAF exam twice — what finally helped me pass on third attempt

I've been trying to pass the SAF certification for almost a year now and honestly it's been humbling. First attempt I went in basically cold after just reading through the handbook — scored a 68, needed a 75. Second attempt I bought a random study guide off Amazon, studied for three weeks, and somehow did worse (65). I was ready to give up.

What turned things around was actually finding a solid SAF practice test that matched the real exam format. I'd been memorizing content without understanding how the questions are actually phrased, and that's where I kept losing points. Once I started doing timed practice runs and reviewing my wrong answers in detail, things clicked. I went from consistently failing mock tests to hitting 80+ in about five weeks.

For anyone else struggling, I'd genuinely focus less on reading and more on doing. The exam tips that helped me most were around time management — I was spending too long on scenario-based questions and rushing the straightforward ones. What's everyone else's experience been with preparing for this one?

This hits close to home. I passed on my second try after failing by just two points the first time. The scenario questions are brutal if you're not used to the format. I spent the last two weeks before my exam doing nothing but practice questions — probably 300+ total. Also made flashcards for the terminology sections because those tripped me up more than I expected. Good luck to anyone still grinding through this.

Time management was my biggest issue too. Set a hard 90-second rule per question during practice and stick to it — it feels artificial at first but by test day it becomes automatic. Saved me on at least 8-10 questions I would've abandoned otherwise.

How long did you study each day leading up to your third attempt? I'm about six weeks out from my test date and feeling pretty lost on how to structure my time. I've got the official study guide but I'm not sure if that's enough on its own or if I should be supplementing with other materials. The practice exams I've found online vary so much in quality it's hard to know what's actually representative of the real thing.
