Finally passed my RT exam after two attempts — what actually worked

So I just got my results back yesterday and I passed! Honestly had to take a moment because after failing by 12 points the first time, I wasn't sure I had it in me. First attempt I went in after about three weeks of just reading the textbook and watching YouTube videos. Big mistake. The exam is way more application-based than I expected — they really want you to think through clinical scenarios, not just recall definitions.

The second time around I gave myself eight weeks and completely changed my approach. I used an RT practice test site almost every day, doing 20-30 questions each morning before work. That repetition of seeing how questions are worded made a huge difference. I also found a solid study guide that broke down ventilator management and ABG interpretation in a way that finally clicked for me. Those two topics showed up constantly.

My exam tips for anyone currently grinding: don't skip the NBRC's own practice exams, and pay attention to the rationales even when you get something right. Sometimes you're right for the wrong reason, and that'll bite you on test day. Happy to answer any questions about what resources I used!

Congrats!! I'm sitting for mine in six weeks and the ABG questions are killing me. Which study guide did you end up using? I've been rotating between three different resources and I think that's actually hurting me more than helping — I keep getting conflicting explanations for the same concepts and it's messing with my confidence. Any chance you stuck to just one main source?

Eight weeks of daily practice questions sounds about right. I did six weeks and barely squeaked by. Next time I'd give myself more time on the mechanical ventilation section specifically — that stuff gets complicated fast and the exam doesn't let you second-guess yourself.

The clinical scenario thing is so real. I passed on my first attempt but I definitely almost failed because I memorized too much and didn't practice applying it. What helped me was doing timed practice blocks of 40 questions to simulate the real pacing. You'll find out pretty fast which topics you actually understand versus which ones you just think you understand. Also, don't neglect neonatal — everyone ignores it and then it shows up like three times.
