RST training — how long is the course and is the exam tough?

Starting a new retail job at a tobacco shop next month. My employer says I need to complete the Responsible Service of Tobacco certification before I can work the counter unsupervised.

How long does the actual training take? I've done RSA before and that took a full day. Is RST similar? And is the exam at the end difficult or is it pretty straightforward if you paid attention during the training?

Any tips for the age verification scenarios? I heard those trip people up most.

Passed first try without any extra studying beyond the course material. Just take notes during the modules and you should be fine on the exam.

Took me about 3 hours total including the exam. Much shorter than RSA. If you've done RSA before you'll find the format familiar.

The age verification scenarios are about applying the right policy, not just knowing the law. Always ask for ID if in doubt — that's almost always the right answer on the exam.

Just passed mine last week so hopefully this helps. The training itself is way shorter than RSA — I finished in about 2-3 hours online. It's mostly focused on age verification, ID checking, and what products you can't sell to certain people. Wasn't nearly as intense as I expected.

The one thing that actually made a difference for me was drilling the compliance and legal side beforehand. I found some free rst compliance and legal regulations practice questions that covered exactly what showed up in the assessment. You'll probably breeze through it if you do a bit of prep, the tricky bits are around the specific exemptions and penalties rather than the general stuff.

Honestly, I failed my first attempt and it was kind of embarrassing because I thought it'd be easy after doing RSA. The RST caught me out on the age verification specifics — like the exact acceptable ID types and what to do when someone looks under 25 but you're not 100% sure. I just skimmed that section the first time around. Big mistake.

Second time I went in I actually sat down and did a proper rst practice test beforehand, which helped me figure out where my gaps were. The questions on prohibited sales — selling to people who are intoxicated, buying on behalf of minors, that kind of thing — came up more than I expected. Training itself is shorter than RSA, usually 2-4 hours depending on your provider, so don't let the length fool you into thinking it's a walkover.

Main thing I'd say: pay attention to the compliance and refusal scenarios, not just the basic product knowledge. That's where people tend to drop marks. You'll be fine once you know what they're actually testing for.
