RMV written test – failed twice, what am I actually missing?

I failed the Massachusetts RMV written test twice in the last month and I'm honestly embarrassed at this point. First time I scored 68%, second time 70% – both under the 72% passing threshold. I've been living in other states for 12 years and driving the whole time, so I thought reviewing the handbook would be enough. Clearly that wasn't the right approach.

The section killing me is the specific Massachusetts laws around right-of-way at rotaries and school zone speed limits in different conditions. The rotary rules here are different from what I was used to in other states and I keep second-guessing myself on those questions. I'm also consistently missing questions about exact distances for following emergency vehicles and parking near fire hydrants.

I've been going through the Massachusetts Driver's Manual but I think I need to memorize specific numbers and distances rather than just reading through it. There are 25 questions on the test and you can only miss 7 – that's a tight margin when you're borderline on 5-6 question types.

My third attempt is scheduled in two weeks and I'm taking a more systematic approach this time. Any tips from people who've passed after struggling would actually be useful here.

For the distance and measurement questions I made a simple table: 10 feet from fire hydrant, 100 feet from school bus flashing lights, 500 feet from emergency vehicles. Drilling the exact numbers rather than trying to understand the logic behind them is faster for the written test specifically.

School zone speed limits in Massachusetts are 20 mph when children are present, and the exam often phrases it in ways that are easy to misread. Make sure you understand what that phrase means legally per the manual – the precise wording matters on those questions.

The rotary rule in Massachusetts trips up almost everyone who's driven in other states – vehicles already in the rotary have the right of way. That's the opposite of how some other states handle it and if you're not consciously thinking about it, you'll pick the wrong answer on instinct. Write it somewhere visible and look at it every day until the test.

I passed on my third attempt too. The biggest change I made was doing 3 full practice test sets per day for the week before, not just reading the manual. Reading it makes you feel prepared but practice questions expose gaps that passive reading doesn't.
