Failed RIBO exam twice — what finally worked for me on attempt three

So I've been lurking here for a while and figured I'd finally share my story since I wish someone had posted this when I was struggling. I failed the RIBO licensing exam in October and again in January — both times I thought I'd studied enough but clearly hadn't. The second fail was honestly demoralizing because I'd put in maybe 60 hours and still came out 12 marks short.

What finally clicked for me was switching up my approach entirely. I stopped just re-reading the IBAO course materials and started doing timed RIBO practice tests under actual exam conditions — phone away, timer running, the whole deal. That's where I figured out my weak spots were really in commercial lines and the legal obligations sections, not personal auto like I assumed.

Third attempt I passed with a 76. Took me about five weeks of focused prep — probably 8-10 hours a week. Happy to answer questions if anyone's going through the same thing right now.

Congrats on the pass! Commercial lines got me on my first attempt too — specifically the difference between occurrence and claims-made policies. Nobody warns you how much that section weighs. One thing that helped me was making a one-page cheat sheet of the standard policy conditions and reading it every morning for two weeks. Sounds tedious but the repetition locks it in. Also the exam tips I found in this community's study thread were genuinely useful for time management during the actual test.

Eight to ten hours a week for five weeks is solid — that's probably around 45-50 hours of targeted prep which seems to be the sweet spot I keep seeing people mention. The timed practice piece is huge. Good on you for posting this.

This is exactly what I needed to read today. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in three weeks and I've been relying way too heavily on just reading the manual. The RIBO study guide from IBAO is dense but it doesn't really train you to apply the concepts under pressure. Switching to practice questions this late feels scary but I think you're right. What score were you consistently hitting on practice tests before you felt ready?
