Failed RCI exam twice — what finally worked for me on attempt three

I've been chasing my RCI certification for almost two years now and honestly thought I was going to give up after my second fail. Both times I scored in the low 70s — so close but not enough. My main weak spots were roof system hydrostatics and the flashings section, which I kept bombing even though I'd read through the manuals cover to cover.

What finally turned things around was switching how I studied. Instead of re-reading the same material, I started hammering an RCI practice test every single evening for about three weeks straight. The repetition forced me to actually recognize my patterns — I was consistently misreading questions about slope calculations and inverted roof assemblies. Once I identified those gaps I could target them specifically instead of just reviewing everything.

Passed with an 82 on my third attempt last month. If anyone else is struggling with the exam, I'm happy to share the study guide resources I used and what topics to really focus on. What are other people finding hardest on this thing?

Congrats on passing! The flashings section got me too on my first attempt. What helped me was drawing out the details by hand instead of just reading them — something about sketching the layers made it stick. Also, don't underestimate the drainage and ponding questions. I spent maybe 40 hours total studying and probably 15 of those were just on water management concepts alone.

I'm currently prepping for my first attempt in August and this thread is giving me both hope and mild terror lol. I've been using a study guide that covers the RCI body of knowledge but I feel like I don't have a good sense of what the actual exam questions look like. Did you find the practice questions pretty representative of the real test, or does the live exam feel totally different?

The exam tips that made the biggest difference for me: read every answer choice before selecting, especially on the scenario-based questions. RCI loves to give you two answers that are both technically correct but one is more correct in context. Slows you down but saves points.
