Finally passed RCAT after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I just got my results this morning and I'm still kind of in shock — passed with an 82! After failing in March by four points, I was seriously questioning whether this certification was worth the stress. I work full-time as a respiratory care tech and studying around night shifts is brutal. The first time I went in I honestly thought I could wing it with some light reviewing. Big mistake.

This time around I spent about six weeks actually being systematic about it. I found a decent RCAT practice test online that helped me figure out where my weak spots were — turns out airway management scenarios and ventilator troubleshooting were killing me. I also grabbed an RCAT study guide that broke down the NBRC content outline section by section, which made the whole thing feel less overwhelming.

My biggest exam tips: don't skip the clinical simulation questions in your prep, they show up way more than I expected. And time yourself — I almost ran out of time on my first attempt because I overthought everything. Anyone else out there prepping right now? Happy to answer questions about what the test day experience is actually like.

Congrats!! I'm about three weeks out from my exam date and this is exactly what I needed to read today. I've been drilling practice questions every night but the ventilator stuff is rough. Can I ask which study guide you used? There are so many options out there and I've wasted money on two that were basically useless. Also — did you feel like the actual exam matched the difficulty of practice materials, or was it harder?

Four points away on the first try is actually closer than it feels — most people I know who retook it passed the second time. The fact that you identified your weak areas and targeted them is exactly the right move. Huge congrats on the 82!

The timed practice thing is so real. I passed on my first attempt last fall but it was close, and looking back I think what saved me was doing full timed mock exams the last two weeks. Your brain just works differently when the clock is running. Also echo what you said about clinical sims — I'd estimate roughly a third of what I saw fell into applied patient management scenarios rather than pure knowledge recall. Good luck to everyone studying right now.
