Failed RBS exam twice — finally passed, here's what actually helped

So I finally passed my RBS certification last week after failing it twice and I honestly feel like I wasted months studying the wrong way. My manager basically told me to just read through the handbook and I'd be fine. Spoiler: I was not fine. The first time I scored a 68%, needed a 75%. Second attempt I got a 73% — so close it hurt.

What finally clicked for me was switching from passive reading to actually doing a proper RBS practice test every day for two weeks. Like sitting down, timing myself, treating it as the real thing. I found a solid study guide that broke down the responsible beverage service laws by scenario type instead of just listing rules, which made a huge difference for the situational questions.

For anyone studying right now — the sections on intoxication signs and intervention techniques tripped me up both times. Those are worth extra focus. What resources did you all use? Curious if anyone else struggled with the scenario-based questions specifically.

Congrats on passing! I went through the same thing last year. The scenario questions are brutal because there's usually two answers that both seem reasonable. My biggest exam tip is to always ask yourself 'what protects the establishment from liability' — that framing helped me eliminate wrong answers way faster. Took me about 12 hours of studying total spread over 10 days.

The intoxication signs section got me too on my first attempt. I kept mixing up the behavioral cues vs. physical cues. What study guide were you using? I'm retaking mine in three weeks and I'm hovering around 70% on practice tests right now. Feeling nervous about the refusal scenarios especially — I always second-guess myself on when exactly you're supposed to cut someone off.

Solid advice. I'd add — don't cram the night before. I did that and my brain was mush. Two solid hours the morning of reviewing refusal scripts and I felt way more confident walking in. The test is very scenario-heavy so practice thinking through situations, not just memorizing definitions.
