Failed PTS exam twice — what finally helped me pass on third attempt

Okay so I've been putting off writing this because honestly it's embarrassing to admit I failed twice, but I figured someone out there might be in the same boat and could use the honesty. I'm a personal trainer with about four years of experience and I assumed that would carry me through the PTS exam without too much studying. Big mistake. First attempt I got a 68, needed a 70. Second time, 69. I wanted to throw my laptop out a window.

What finally clicked for me was actually being systematic about it. I spent three weeks going through a proper PTS study guide instead of just reviewing my notes, and I started doing timed PTS practice test sets every single day — like treating it as actual exam conditions. Biomechanics and program design were my weak spots, so I hammered those until I dreamed about FITT principles.

Third attempt I got an 81. If you're struggling, what's your timeline looking like and which domains are tripping you up? Happy to share what resources actually helped.

This is so relatable, honestly. I passed on my second try but the first time I was completely blindsided by the nutrition questions — I thought it'd be mostly anatomy and exercise technique. The timed practice approach is real though. When I started simulating actual exam conditions instead of just casually reviewing flashcards, my scores jumped like 12 points in two weeks. Congrats on passing, and thanks for being honest about the process.

Can I ask which study guide you used? I've been looking at a few options and there's so much out there it's hard to know what's actually worth the money. I'm planning to sit for mine in about six weeks and I feel okay on the anatomy side but program design confuses me, especially when they ask about special populations. Any exam tips for that section specifically?

Program design for special populations trips up almost everyone I know who took the PTS. Focus on contraindicated exercises for each condition — that's where a lot of the tricky questions come from. Good luck to everyone studying!
