PRINCE2 Foundation vs Practitioner — is Foundation enough for most project roles?

Project coordinator in the UK, 3 years experience, looking to get PRINCE2 certified. My employer would reimburse Foundation but not Practitioner (the cost gap is significant). Is Foundation meaningful on its own or does it just signal 'started PRINCE2 but didn't finish'?

Most job postings I see say 'PRINCE2 qualified' without specifying Foundation or Practitioner. Are hiring managers actually differentiating?

Foundation is a real credential that demonstrates knowledge of the methodology. Practitioner demonstrates you can apply it. For a coordinator role, Foundation is often sufficient. Senior PM and PM roles increasingly want Practitioner.

In my experience UK hiring managers do differentiate — Practitioner signals you can apply the methodology without handholding. If you're targeting PM roles in the next 2-3 years, plan on doing Practitioner even if you start with Foundation now.

Foundation first is a sensible approach — study once, sit Foundation, then you only need a bridge course for Practitioner rather than starting from scratch. Practically speaking, you can often negotiate employer reimbursement for Practitioner once you're already Foundation-certified and asking for a promotion.
