Second-career teacher in the application process. I have a master's in sociology and 12 years professional experience but I'm applying to a post-bacc certification program that requires both the Praxis Core Academic Skills and the subject area test (I'll be teaching social studies).

I'm much more worried about the math component of the Praxis Core than the social studies content. It's been 15 years since I did anything beyond basic arithmetic. How rigorous is the Core Math section actually?

Core Math is not advanced — it's high school level math: algebra, geometry, basic statistics, number properties. But 'high school level' after a 15-year gap still requires real prep. Give yourself 6-8 weeks of focused Khan Academy work on the specific skills tested.

The math section trips up more career changers than the content tests, hands down. Most people with master's degrees underestimate it because they assume the 'Core' label means it's easy. It's not hard but it's not trivial cold.

The Core Writing is often overlooked but has a two-part essay section that needs practice. Don't skip prep on that just because you write professionally — the essay rubric has specific things it's looking for.
