Praxis 5001 Elementary Education — which content area do you study hardest?

Enrolled in an alternative certification program and have the Praxis 5001 (Elementary Education: Multiple Subjects) scheduled in 10 weeks. The exam covers ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science. I have a strong ELA background (former editor) but math is where I'll need the most work.

The Math subtest especially concerns me — elementary math sounds easy but I've heard the conceptual reasoning questions are much harder than they appear. Any specific topics to prioritize?

You're right to worry about the conceptual math. Questions about explaining place value, fraction models, and ratio reasoning conceptually are much harder than just computing the answers. Study how to teach the concept, not just how to solve it.

I'd say equal time on Math and Science. The Science subtest has a lot of content breadth — life, earth, and physical science — and it catches people who assume it's straightforward. The ELA subtest should be quick points for you.

The Praxis 5001 Study Companion (free on ETS website) is the best starting resource. It has practice questions with explanations that show what kind of thinking each subtest is measuring.
