I'm an operations manager being asked to take on purchasing responsibilities at my company. My background is production/scheduling, not procurement. The company wants me to get a formal purchasing certification within a year.

I'm looking at CPSM (Institute for Supply Management) vs CSCP (APICS) vs CPP. Which certification pathway makes the most sense for someone transitioning from operations into a purchasing/procurement role?

CSCP is broader (supply chain management) and might be more relevant if your role spans operations and purchasing rather than pure procurement. It's also somewhat easier to study for with an operations background since some content maps to what you already know.

CPSM is the most recognized specifically for purchasing and supply management. If procurement is the job, CPSM is the credential employers look for most consistently. Your operations background is actually a strength for the supply chain design portions.

The ISM CPSM study materials are excellent and the content directly maps to procurement roles. Three module exams gives you flexibility to pace the study. I'd start with Module 1 (Foundation of Supply Management) to assess fit.
