How long did it actually take you to prep for the PNC exam?

I'm a registered nurse with about 8 years in parish nursing and I'm finally sitting down to get my PNC. My hospital is pushing for it as part of a faith community nursing initiative, and I want to make sure I'm not walking in underprepared. I passed the RN boards years ago but that was a completely different experience.

From what I've gathered, the exam covers health promotion, community assessment, spiritual care integration, and professional advocacy. What I'm not clear on is how much weight the spiritual care component carries versus the clinical modules. My clinical knowledge is solid but the theological integration pieces feel fuzzy to me.

I've been putting in about 90 minutes a day for 3 weeks and I feel like I'm maybe 60% ready. Is that normal? Did people find the official IPNRC practice questions close to real exam difficulty, or are they easier than what you actually face on test day?

Any advice on how many total study hours felt enough before scheduling would be really helpful. I'm thinking 8-10 weeks at my current pace but I honestly don't know if that's overkill or too little.

I used the IPNRC study guide plus one third-party workbook and that combination worked well. Put in around 50 total hours over 7 weeks. Don't neglect the professional role and advocacy domain — I underestimated it and it came up a lot.

I did about 6 weeks at roughly 2 hours a day and felt comfortable going in. Scored an 82% on my final practice run and ended up passing on the first attempt. The spiritual care section wasn't as heavily weighted as I feared — maybe 20% of what I faced.

The official practice materials are slightly easier than the real exam in my experience. Bump whatever score you're getting on practice tests down about 5-7% to get a realistic picture of readiness. The format and content areas are accurate though.

8 weeks is not overkill, especially if you've been out of school for a while. The community assessment domain tripped me up more than anything else because it's broader than it sounds. Focus hard on needs assessment frameworks and health ministry models.

The clinical questions are straightforward for an experienced RN. It's really the parish-specific content that separates people.
