Failed my journeyman plumbing exam twice — what am I missing?

So I'm officially on my third attempt coming up in six weeks and I'm honestly starting to question everything. First time I failed by 4 points, second time by 2. I feel like I keep getting tripped up on the pipe systems and materials section — like I know the basics but the questions always seem to find some edge case I haven't studied. I've been using a random mix of YouTube videos and old textbooks my uncle gave me, but I don't think that's cutting it anymore.

A buddy from my apprenticeship suggested I switch to more structured Plumbing practice test resources instead of just reading. I found the Plumbing Pipe Systems & Materials practice tests this week and they actually feel closer to real exam questions than anything else I've tried. The explanations when you get something wrong are genuinely helpful.

For anyone who's passed — how many hours a week were you studying in the final month? And is there a particular study guide format that clicked for you? I need a real plan this time, not just hoping something sticks.

I was in almost the exact same spot — failed once before passing on my second attempt. What finally helped me was treating practice tests like actual exams: timed, no interruptions, phone away. I'd review every wrong answer immediately after. Honestly the pipe materials questions were my weak spot too. Once I drilled those specifically for about two weeks straight, my score jumped maybe 12 points. Give yourself at least 90 minutes a day in that final month.

Curious what state you're testing in? The exam tips I'd give vary a bit depending on whether you're doing ICC or a state-specific exam. Either way though, don't ignore the code reference sections — a lot of people study concepts but forget they can actually look things up during the test. Knowing WHERE to find answers fast is its own skill. Some people waste 20 minutes hunting through the codebook and tank their score just on time.

Two points both times is brutal, you're basically there. Don't overthink the study guide stuff — just pick one resource and go deep on it rather than jumping around. Consistency beats variety this close to the exam. You've clearly got the knowledge, it sounds more like a test-taking confidence issue at this point.
