I've been compiling resources as I study for my Photography certification and figured I'd share what I've found. All free unless noted.

Practice Tests:

  • PracticeTestGeeks — most comprehensive collection I've found, good question explanations, covers Photography, Product Photography. Free.
  • Official practice materials from the certifying body — usually 1 free sample exam, worth doing even though it's short

Study Materials:

  • The official Photography exam handbook / candidate guide (PDF, free from the certifying body's website)
  • YouTube — search for "Photography exam prep" — there are surprisingly good free video reviews for most photography & media certifications
  • Reddit r/certifications — people post their exam experiences and tips regularly

Paid (worth it if budget allows):

  • Official study guides run $30-80 for most photography & media certifications — worth it if your exam has lots of specific factual content
  • Some certifying bodies offer prep courses — check if your employer covers it (many do for required certifications)

What resources have others found useful for photography & media exams? I'll add them to this list.

The official candidate guide is something a lot of people skip but it literally tells you the topic weighting and domain breakdown. It's the roadmap for your study plan. Never skip it.

For Photography specifically, I found the PracticeTestGeeks explanations were detailed enough that I didn't need to buy a separate study guide. The combination of doing the practice questions + reading every explanation (for both right and wrong answers) covered most of the content I needed.

Great list. I'd add: LinkedIn Learning has some photography & media-related courses that overlap with cert content, and if you have a library card many libraries give free access to it. Also check if your local library has access to O'Reilly or similar — tons of technical content there.

Honestly, fitting in exam prep around a full-time job and two kids wasn't easy, but I managed to pass last month so here's what actually worked for me. I studied in 20-30 minute chunks during lunch and after the kids went to bed. The photography practice test pdf format was a lifesaver because I could print a few pages and study without needing to be at a computer. It's low-tech but it works.

The biggest thing I'd tell working adults is don't try to cram everything at once. I spent maybe 45 minutes on a good day, sometimes just 15. Consistency beat marathon sessions every time. I also didn't bother with paid courses until I'd exhausted the free stuff first, and honestly the free resources covered like 90% of what showed up on the actual test.

Failed my first attempt back in March and honestly it was a wake-up call. I'd been just reading through notes and watching YouTube videos but I wasn't actually testing myself on anything. The second time I made myself do a timed practice test every single day for two weeks, and that's what actually moved the needle. I found a photography practice test pdf I could print out and work through offline which helped me focus without getting distracted.

The other thing I changed was stopping after every wrong answer and figuring out why I got it wrong instead of just moving on. Sounds obvious but I wasn't doing it the first time. Passed with a 79 on my second attempt so it's definitely doable if you adjust how you're studying, not just how much.
