Finally passed PEAT after two attempts — here's what actually helped

I've been in the electrical field for about six years and finally decided to get serious about the PEAT certification this past winter. First attempt back in October was a disaster — I scored a 68 and the passing threshold is 75, so I had some real work to do. Honestly thought I could just review my old textbooks and wing it, which was a mistake.

What turned things around was actually committing to a structured approach. I spent about 8 weeks going through a solid PEAT study guide section by section — power quality, grounding, transient protection — instead of jumping around to whatever felt comfortable. I also started doing PEAT practice test questions daily, even just 20-30 questions on lunch breaks. Tracking which topics I kept missing helped me stop wasting time on stuff I already knew.

Passed with an 82 on my second try last month. Happy to share what worked and what didn't if anyone's in the same boat. Curious what resources others found useful — there's not a ton of material out there for this one.

Congrats on passing! I'm scheduled for mine in about 10 weeks and power quality is killing me. I've been using a PEAT practice test set I found and consistently bombing the transient surge questions. Did you find any particular resource that broke those concepts down clearly? My day job is mostly residential so some of the industrial stuff feels foreign.

Thanks for posting this. I've been putting off registering because I wasn't sure where to start studying. Knowing that daily practice questions made a real difference is exactly the kind of practical advice I needed to hear. Registering this week.

Two attempts is nothing to be embarrassed about — I know a few senior engineers who took it three times. The exam tips I wish someone had told me earlier: don't skip the IEEE standard references in your prep, and watch your time on the calculation-heavy sections. I passed on my first attempt but barely, and I think I spent way too long on 4-5 questions that cost me time on easier ones at the end.
