Failed PCI exam twice — what finally helped me pass on attempt 3

I'm not going to sugarcoat it: I was humiliated after failing the PCI certification twice. First time I scored a 68, thought I just got unlucky. Second attempt I got a 71 — close, but still not there. I'd been studying from the official manual alone and clearly that wasn't cutting it.

What changed for me was finding a solid PCI practice test that actually mirrored the real exam format. I'd been reading concepts without ever stress-testing myself under timed conditions. Once I started doing timed 100-question sets, my weak spots became obvious fast — compliance frameworks and cardholder data environment scoping were killing me. I spent about 3 weeks doing practice questions every night for 45 minutes after work.

Third attempt I passed with an 84. Wanted to share what worked in case anyone else is grinding through this. Would love to hear what study guides or exam tips others found useful — especially for the network segmentation questions, which still felt tricky even on my passing attempt.

Scoping questions got me too on my first attempt. What helped me was drawing out network diagrams by hand for each practice scenario rather than just reading through them. Sounds tedious but it forces you to actually think about which systems are in-scope versus out-of-scope. Also the study guide from the PCI Security Standards Council website has a glossary that's worth memorizing — probably 10-12 questions on my exam came straight from those definitions.

How long did you study total across all three attempts? I'm scheduled for six weeks from now and honestly not sure if that's enough time. I've got maybe 8-10 hours a week to dedicate to it. Currently working through a study guide I bought but it feels really dense and I'm worried I'm spending too much time reading and not enough time doing actual PCI practice test questions. Any advice on splitting that time?

Six weeks is doable if you're disciplined. I'd flip to 70% practice questions, 30% reading once you're past week two. Reviewing why you got wrong answers teaches you way more than re-reading chapters. Good luck — the exam is definitely passable, it just rewards active studying over passive reading.
