Failed my skilled trades certification twice — what am I missing?

Okay so I'm officially frustrated. I've been trying to get my certification for about four months now and I've failed twice — first time by 6 points, second time by 3. I'm clearly getting closer but I can't figure out what's tripping me up. I've been using a couple different textbooks but honestly the way the actual exam phrases questions is completely different from anything I studied.

A friend suggested I try an Other Skilled Trades Welding practice test to get a feel for the question format, and it actually helped me realize I was overthinking the safety and code sections. Has anyone else found that practicing with timed tests made a bigger difference than just re-reading material? I do about 2 hours of studying on weekdays and maybe 4 on weekends.

My weak spots seem to be blueprint reading and material calculations — anyone have a solid Other Skilled Trades study guide recommendation or specific exam tips for those areas? I need to pass this next attempt, I've got a job offer contingent on getting certified.

The blueprint reading section got me too. What finally clicked was doing nothing but print exercises for two straight weeks — no other studying. I mean literally drew out practice layouts by hand until I could visualize dimensions without even thinking. Also, for material calculations, write out the formula steps every single time even if you think you know it. Timed pressure makes you skip steps and that's where points bleed.

Have you tried the practice tests that mirror the actual item format? I used the Other Skilled Trades Welding 2 set and the question structure is really close to what I saw on test day. The thing about the real exam is it loves to give you one answer that's technically correct but not the best practice answer — that distinction tripped me up constantly until I specifically trained for it.

3 points away is so close, you're basically there. For your next attempt just don't cram the night before — seriously. Sleep beats one more pass through the material every time. You've got this.
