Registered for the OSC exam and trying to allocate my study time. I've been an administrative assistant for 4 years so I know office software well, but I've never taken a formal certification before.
The exam covers word processing, spreadsheets, database basics, and business communication. I'm confident in Word and Excel but the database module worries me since I mostly use Excel as my database.
How rigorous are the database questions? And does the business communication section test grammar rules or more situational judgment?
Database questions are more conceptual than technical — they won't ask you to write SQL but they will test whether you understand table relationships, primary keys, and basic query logic. If you know Excel well the concepts translate, just learn the terminology.
Business communication is mostly situational judgment plus some grammar. They'll give you a workplace scenario and ask what the appropriate communication approach is. Professional tone, email etiquette, and when to escalate in writing tend to show up.
People with real admin experience usually find this exam easier than expected. The hardest part tends to be the time pressure, not the content. Practice completing tasks quickly, not just accurately.
The spreadsheet module goes deeper than basic Excel use — expect questions on functions, pivot tables, and data validation. If you've been using Excel for 4 years you probably know most of it already, just review the formula categories.
I failed my first attempt and honestly it wasn't the software skills that got me — it was the business communication and database sections.
