Finally passed OIT after two attempts — here's what actually worked

So I just got my results this morning and I passed the OIT exam on my second try. Honestly I'm still in shock. The first time I went in pretty confident, had been in the industry for three years and figured my hands-on experience would carry me. Scored a 68 and needed a 70. Gutting.

This time around I completely changed my approach. I spent about six weeks using an OIT practice test site daily — like actually timed myself and reviewed every wrong answer instead of just clicking through. The practice questions exposed so many gaps I didn't even know I had, especially around HVAC controls and refrigerant regulations. I also grabbed a study guide that broke down the domains by weight, which helped me prioritize instead of trying to review everything equally.

Biggest exam tips I can share: don't skip the safety and regulatory sections even if you know the field, and time yourself during practice because the real test moves fast. Happy to answer questions if anyone's prepping right now.

Congrats! I'm scheduled for mine in three weeks and honestly this is exactly what I needed to read. I've been relying too much on my work experience too. Which domains showed up the most on your second attempt? I've been spending most of my time on electrical theory but wondering if I'm overweighting it.

Two attempts is super common for this one, don't let anyone make you feel bad about it. The pass rate is lower than people expect going in. Good on you for actually analyzing your wrong answers — most people just retake without changing anything.

The regulatory stuff got me too on my first attempt. Everyone warned me about it but I still underestimated how detailed the questions were. What study guide did you end up using? I've gone through two different ones and they feel pretty surface-level. Also did you do any hands-on review or mostly just reading and practice tests?
