Finally passed OHST after two attempts — here's what actually helped

I'm so relieved to finally have this behind me. Failed my first attempt back in February by 8 points, which honestly crushed me because I'd been studying for about six weeks. The problem was I was reading the ASSE reference material cover to cover like it was a textbook, but that's not really how the exam tests you. It's way more application-based than I expected.

Second time around I completely changed my approach. I spent the first two weeks doing an OHST practice test every other day and reviewing every single wrong answer instead of just moving on. That forced me to understand the reasoning behind industrial hygiene calculations, hazard recognition, and the OSHA recordkeeping rules — not just memorize bullet points.

The study guide I used also helped me figure out which domains were worth the most points so I could prioritize. Anyone else retaking this or prepping for their first attempt? Happy to share more specifics about the sections I found trickiest.

Congrats! I passed mine last fall and the practice tests were honestly the biggest game-changer for me too. I'd say the industrial hygiene math section tripped me up the most — air sampling calculations especially. My exam tips for anyone reading: don't sleep on the emergency response domain, it showed up way more than I expected. What study guide did you end up using for the second attempt?

This is really encouraging to read. I'm scheduled for July and I'm honestly nervous. I've been working in safety for 4 years so I thought the material would feel familiar, but some of the regulatory stuff is way more specific than what I deal with day to day. How many practice questions did you work through total? And did the real exam feel similar in difficulty to the practice tests you were using?

Eight points is brutal — that's so close. Glad the second attempt went better. The application-style questions are no joke. I've heard a lot of people say the same thing about shifting from passive reading to active practice. Bookmarking this thread for when I start my own prep.
