Finally passed Ohio notary exam after two failed attempts — here's what helped

So I've been trying to get my Ohio notary commission for about three months now and honestly it's been more of a journey than I expected. I work at a title company and my boss has been patient but I could tell she was getting a little frustrated. The first two times I took the exam I didn't really study — I figured how hard could it be, right? Wrong. The legal stuff around acknowledgments and jurats tripped me up both times.

What finally clicked was finding a solid OH NOTARY practice test online and just grinding through it over a few evenings. I probably did 200+ practice questions total. The Ohio Notary Public Law booklet is dense but pairing it with a good study guide made it way more digestible. I specifically focused on prohibited acts, signature requirements, and the journal rules — those came up a lot.

Passed with an 88 last week. If anyone else is studying for this, happy to share what resources I used. What topics are you guys finding the trickiest?

Congrats! I passed mine back in February and the acknowledgments vs. jurats distinction is genuinely confusing at first. What helped me was writing out the difference by hand a few times until it was automatic. The exam tips I found most useful came from someone in a Facebook group for Ohio notaries — basically don't overthink the scenario questions, go with what the law strictly says, not what seems reasonable.

Wait so you have to take an actual exam now? I got commissioned in 2019 and just had to fill out paperwork through my county. I'm due for renewal next year and I heard they changed the requirements. Did you take it online or in person? And how long did you actually spend studying — I'm trying to plan out my timeline here.

The journal stuff seriously catches people off guard. Ohio requires you to keep records for five years and there are specific fields you have to log. Make sure you know that cold before test day — it's an easy few points if you've memorized it.
