Son sitting OC test in 6 weeks — realistic to prepare at this stage?

My son is 9 and we just found out his school is allowing him to sit the OC test next month. We haven't done any structured prep at all and I'm a bit stressed about whether 6 weeks is even worth it or if we're just setting him up for disappointment. He's a bright kid but I genuinely don't know what the test expects.

From what I've gathered, it covers mathematical reasoning, reading comprehension, and thinking skills. He's strong in maths — probably around the 90th percentile based on school results — but reading and the abstract reasoning sections are less certain. We've been doing about 30 minutes every other day since we found out, which feels inadequate.

Has anyone prepped a child in a similar timeframe and seen meaningful improvement? I know the OC is competitive and cutoff scores vary by region, but even if he doesn't get in I'd like him to walk out feeling like he gave it a fair shot. Any specific timing advice or resources appreciated.

6 weeks is tight but not useless. My daughter prepped for 5 weeks and improved her practice scores by about 15 points across sections. The thinking skills section responded most to focused daily practice.

We started 8 weeks out and honestly I think 2 to 3 months is the sweet spot. The mistake I made was drilling past papers back to back without reviewing errors properly — go slower and actually fix the misses.

The maths reasoning section is different from school maths — it's more pattern-based and abstract. If he's strong in standard maths he might need some adjustment to the question style, but he should adapt quickly with a bit of exposure.

30 minutes every other day probably isn't enough at this stage. We did 45 minutes daily for the last 4 weeks and that consistency made a noticeable difference. The fatigue during a 2-hour sitting is real for kids that age.

Six weeks is honestly plenty if you're consistent. I studied for the OC with my son last year while working full time, and we just did 20-30 minutes every evening after dinner — nothing intense. The free oc general ability practice questions online were a lifesaver for us because he could do them independently once he got the hang of the format. That freed me up to just review his answers at the end rather than sitting with him the whole time.

The biggest thing I noticed is that kids get way more confident once they understand what the questions are actually asking — it's a specific style and it's learnable. Your son being bright already puts him ahead. Don't stress about covering everything, just make it a daily habit and keep it low pressure so he doesn't dread it.
