NYS PCO exam — how does the core test compare to the 7a category exam?

Getting ready to take the New York State pesticide applicator exam and trying to understand how the core exam stacks up against the category-specific one. My employer wants me licensed for Category 7a (ornamental and turf) but I need to pass core first. I've been studying about 3 weeks, maybe 90 minutes a day, and I'm not sure if I'm ready.

From what I can tell, core covers pesticide safety, environmental law, label reading, and integrated pest management. The 7a content adds pest identification and specific application methods on top of that. Is core harder than 7a or the other way around? I've heard some people say the core trips them up more despite covering more general material.

Also — can you take both exams the same day or do they need to be scheduled separately? I'd love to knock both out in one trip to the testing center. Any experience with how the DEC exam is actually formatted?

The label reading questions on core are no joke. They'll give you a snippet of a fake label and ask very specific things about signal words, re-entry intervals, and PPE requirements. Reading practice labels is the best prep for that section.

You can take them the same day at most PSI testing centers. I did core and 7a back to back and it was fine — about 3.5 hours total including check-in. Core honestly felt harder because the questions are more regulatory and the wording is trickier.

7a was harder for me personally because of the pest ID questions — some of the insect descriptions are very specific. Core I felt more prepared for since the pesticide safety content overlaps with day-to-day work. Really depends on your background.

Three weeks at 90 minutes a day is solid. The DEC study materials track closely with the actual questions. I passed core with an 82% and 7a with a 79% — the passing threshold is 70% for both.
