Finally passed my NYC civil service exam after two failed attempts

I just got my results yesterday and I'm still kind of in shock — I passed with an 89 after failing twice before. The first time I went in basically cold and scored a 67. Second attempt I studied a little but not consistently and got a 71. This time I actually treated it seriously.

What finally clicked for me was finding a solid NYC practice test that matched the actual format. I was wasting time on generic material that didn't reflect how the city structures their questions — the reading comprehension and data interpretation sections especially are pretty different from what you'd find on a basic study guide. Once I started drilling those specific question types, my speed improved a lot.

My biggest exam tips: don't skip the written expression section thinking it's easy (I lost points there both times), and time yourself strictly during practice. I was running out of time on the real test until I started doing timed sets every single day for three weeks. Anyone else here studying for a NYC civil service exam? Happy to share what worked.

Congrats! This is motivating to read. I'm currently prepping for the Administrative Associate exam and the time pressure is killing me on practice runs. How many questions were you getting through before you started timing yourself? I feel like I'm at maybe 60% completion when the clock runs out and I don't know how to fix that without just doing it faster, which sounds obvious but isn't helpful lol.

89 is a great score, that'll put you high on the list. I passed mine last year with an 84 and got called within eight months. The waiting is its own challenge but you're in a good spot. Keep your contact info updated with DCAS!

The written expression thing is real — I thought the same thing and lost a bunch of points on my first attempt. For anyone reading this who's just starting out, don't sleep on that section. The NYC study guide from the DCAS website is actually decent for understanding what they're looking for stylistically. It's dry reading but worth it. Also the math reasoning section has a very specific format that's worth practicing separately.
