How long did you study for the NSC certification exam and what worked?

Hey everyone, I've been prepping for my NSC - National Safety Council exam for about three weeks now and honestly I'm starting to second-guess my timeline. I work full-time in occupational health so I can only squeeze in maybe 90 minutes of studying on weeknights. I've gone through the official handbook twice and I feel okay on the regulatory stuff, but the clinical knowledge sections are killing me. Someone at work mentioned the pass rate isn't great on the first attempt and now I'm spiraling a little.

I found some free resources online that actually helped — especially the FREE NSC Clinical Knowledge Questions and Answers which had questions that felt really close to what I imagine the real exam covers. Has anyone used a structured NSC - National Safety Council practice test alongside the official materials? Looking for study guide recommendations that don't cost an arm and a leg. My exam is in 5 weeks and I'm targeting at least a 75 to feel comfortable going in.

I studied for about 6 weeks and the clinical evaluation section tripped me up the most. What really clicked for me was doing timed practice questions — like actually setting a timer — because the real exam has you moving faster than you'd expect. I probably did 200+ practice questions total. Don't just read answers, write out WHY the wrong ones are wrong. That's the thing nobody tells you.

5 weeks is totally doable if you're consistent. I passed on my first attempt with maybe 40 hours of total prep. Honestly the nutrition interventions content was where I lost the most time because I underestimated it. There's a free set of practice questions for that section — I wish I'd found it earlier. Also, the exam tips in the NSC study guide appendix are weirdly specific and worth memorizing.

Don't overthink the timeline — five weeks is plenty. I crammed in three and passed. Just make sure you're doing active recall, not just re-reading. Mock exams the last two weeks made the biggest difference for me.
