Failed the NPS exam twice — what finally worked for me

I've been trying to get my NPS certification for almost a year now and honestly I was starting to think it just wasn't going to happen. Failed the first attempt in October with a 68 — needed a 75 — then failed again in February with a 71. Both times I felt like I understood the material but something was off with how I was studying.

What changed for me was switching from just reading the handbook to actually drilling questions under timed conditions. I found a good NPS practice test online and started doing full 150-question sets twice a week. That simulation pressure made a huge difference. I also stopped skimming the study guide and started taking notes by hand on the sections I kept getting wrong — mostly resource management and law enforcement protocols.

Passed last week with an 82. If you're stuck, I'd really focus on the operational planning and visitor services sections — those showed up way more than I expected. Happy to share more specific exam tips if anyone's prepping right now.

Two fails and still came back for a third shot — that takes guts. Saving this post for motivation when I'm deep in study mode next month. The timed practice test tip especially, I always study in this relaxed no-pressure way and then freeze up on the actual exam.

Congrats! Seriously, this gives me hope. I'm on my first attempt coming up in three weeks and the timed practice sets advice is exactly what I needed to hear. I've been reading but not really testing myself under pressure. What score were you hitting on practice tests before you finally passed? I want to know if I'm in the ballpark.

The resource management section got me too on my first attempt — I completely underestimated it. One thing that helped me was grouping topics by the competency areas instead of just going chapter by chapter through the study guide. Made the connections way clearer. Also the superintendent interview scenarios tripped me up until I practiced talking through them out loud. Sounds weird but it works.
