Finally passed my NPA exam after failing twice — here's what helped

So I just got my results yesterday and I finally passed the NPA certification. Honestly couldn't believe it after two failed attempts. I'm a newer pharmacist tech and my supervisor kind of pushed me into sitting for it before I felt ready, which was a mistake both times. This third attempt I actually treated it seriously.

The biggest change was using a proper NPA practice test to figure out where my gaps were. I was spending way too much time on stuff I already knew — drug classifications, basic calculations — and completely ignoring pharmacy law and compounding standards, which is apparently a huge chunk of the actual exam. Once I identified that, I restructured everything around a targeted study guide instead of just reviewing my old notes randomly.

For anyone else preparing, I'd say give yourself at least 6-8 weeks minimum and don't underestimate the law sections. My timeline was 10 weeks this round and I did about 90 minutes of focused studying 5 days a week. Happy to answer questions if anyone's in the same boat I was.

Congrats! I took mine about 8 months ago and totally agree about the law sections catching people off guard. Nobody warned me how heavily they weight federal vs state regulations. I also found that doing timed practice questions back-to-back was way more useful than just reading content. Your brain needs to get used to switching topics fast the way the real test jumps around.

This is really helpful, thanks for sharing. Can I ask which study guide you ended up using? I've seen a few different ones recommended and honestly the options are overwhelming. I'm scheduled for my first attempt in about 7 weeks and I'm already worried I haven't started the right way. Did you use any specific resources for the pharmacy law part specifically or just general prep materials?

10 weeks is solid prep time. A lot of people underestimate how much the NPA exam tests practical application over just memorization. Exam tips I'd add: read every question twice before answering and don't second-guess yourself too much. Your first instinct is usually right on the calculation problems.
