Finally passed the Nonprofit exam after two attempts — here's what worked
So I've been lurking here for a while and wanted to share my experience because I really struggled the first time around. I work for a small community foundation and my ED basically said getting this certification would open doors for a program director role. No pressure, right? First attempt I scored a 68, which stings when passing is 75. I underestimated how deep the governance questions go.
Second time I completely changed my approach. I spent about 4 weeks with a proper study guide focused on board fiduciary duties, conflict of interest policies, and IRS compliance — the stuff I glossed over before. I also did a ton of practice questions, including the Nonprofit Nonprofit Governance practice test, which really helped me see where my gaps were. The scenario-based questions on that resource felt very close to the actual exam style.
Anyone else find the financial oversight section brutal? I'm decent with program work but reading 990s and understanding audit committee responsibilities felt like learning a new language. What resources helped you most for that chunk?
