Finally passed my NNP boards after failing twice — here's what worked

I'm not gonna sugarcoat it — I failed the NNP exam twice before I finally passed last month, and I want to share what actually made the difference because I wish someone had told me this stuff earlier. My first two attempts I was just reading Kenner & Lott cover to cover and calling it a day. Spoiler: that's not enough.

What changed everything was getting serious with an NNP practice test routine. I did timed question blocks every single day for six weeks — like 50 questions minimum, no exceptions. I also found a solid NNP study guide that organized the content by system (resp, cardiac, neuro, GI) which finally made the pathophysiology click for me. The exam is way more application-focused than I expected, not just recall.

My weak spots were pharmacology and fluid/electrolyte management — both showed up heavily. Anyone else prepping right now or recently went through this? Would love to compare notes on which topics felt most heavily tested and any exam tips that helped you stay focused during the actual 4-hour block.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for mine in August and the pharm section is killing me too. My preceptor told me to really nail the mechanism of action for common drips — dopamine vs dobutamine vs epi dosing thresholds come up constantly. I've been doing about 40 practice questions a day and tracking which domains I'm weak in on a spreadsheet. Three weeks in and my mock scores finally crept above 70%, which feels better.

The application-style questions are no joke. I thought my NICU bedside experience would carry me more than it did, but the exam really tests whether you can synthesize and prioritize, not just recall facts. I ended up retaking a pharmacology module from my NNP program before my second attempt. Also — don't skip the ethics and legal sections in your study guide. I underestimated those and they showed up way more than I expected on test day.

Huge congrats! Six weeks of daily practice questions is serious dedication. For anyone reading: take your breaks during the exam. I almost skipped them trying to 'save time' and by hour three my brain was mush. Get up, eat something, reset. Sounds simple but it genuinely helps your accuracy in that final stretch.
