Finally passed the NM bar after two attempts — what actually worked for me

I'm not sure where to start except to say that sitting for the New Mexico bar exam twice is something I'd never wish on anyone. After my first attempt I was devastated — I missed the passing score by 11 points and had basically no idea where I went wrong. The feedback was so vague it was almost useless. I ended up completely overhauling my approach before the second sitting.

The biggest change I made was actually using a structured NM BAR practice test routine instead of just reading through outlines passively. I was putting in maybe 3-4 hours a day in the six weeks leading up to the exam, but I made sure at least half of that was active recall — practice questions, timed essays, MEE practice. I also picked up a New Mexico-specific study guide that covered the community property rules and the state procedural quirks that national prep courses just gloss over.

Anyone else here studying for an upcoming sitting? Happy to share what resources helped most. The essay component especially — I had some real turning points once I understood what graders actually want to see.

I passed on my first attempt last year but honestly I think I got lucky on the essays. My score was higher than expected. What I'd tell anyone is don't underestimate the MPT — I know it sounds manageable but the time pressure is brutal. I spent maybe two weeks doing nothing but NM BAR exam tips from people who'd already gone through it, and that alone probably saved me. Real talk: forums like this are worth more than half the prep books.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for it this July and the community property rules are absolutely killing me. New Mexico is one of those states where the national bar prep courses treat it almost as an afterthought and then you get to the actual exam and half the questions have some NM-specific twist. Did you find any particular practice test sets that mirrored the real thing closely in terms of difficulty?

This is really encouraging to read. Failed in February and I've been kind of stuck in my head about retaking. Knowing someone came back from 11 points down and made it through helps more than I expected. Starting fresh with practice tests this week.
