Finally passed my NJMVC knowledge test after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I failed my NJ driver's knowledge test twice and was absolutely mortified. Both times I thought I studied enough but then got blindsided by questions about road sign shapes and right-of-way rules that I just hadn't drilled properly. My third appointment is in two weeks and I'm not going in unprepared again.

What finally clicked for me was switching from just reading the manual to actually doing timed NJMVC practice test questions every single day. I found a study guide that breaks everything into sections — road signs, traffic laws, alcohol/drug rules — and I'm doing at least 50 questions a night. The passing score is 80% (32 out of 40 correct) and I was consistently hitting 65-70% before, now I'm averaging around 87%.

Has anyone else bombed it multiple times before passing? What specific topics tripped you up the most? I'm especially nervous about the distance/speed calculation questions and anything involving school bus laws. Any exam tips from people who passed recently would seriously help my anxiety right now.

The school bus laws are worth memorizing cold — how many feet to stop, when you can pass, all of it. My test had three separate questions just on that topic which surprised me. I used a study guide that had a dedicated section and drilled it for two days straight. Also the practice test format really does mirror the actual test pretty closely in terms of question style, so keep grinding those. What county are you testing in?

Failed it once myself back in March. Honestly the road signs section killed me — I knew the colors but kept mixing up the exact shapes. What helped most was making flashcards for every single sign in the manual. Also don't sleep on the alcohol impairment questions, there were like 5-6 of them on my test. Once I focused there my scores jumped fast. You've got this, third time's the charm for real.

Don't overthink the speed/distance stuff, it's mostly just knowing the basic rules — 25mph school zones, 65mph highways. The real traps are the weird right-of-way scenarios at intersections. Read each question twice before answering. You're scoring 87% now, that's solid. You'll pass.
