I just got my acceptance letter for the IBEW Local electrical apprenticeship and wanted to share what worked for me on the NJATC aptitude test because I know a lot of applicants stress about it. I scored an 8.5 out of 9 on the overall assessment. The test has two main sections: an algebra and functions portion with 33 questions in 46 minutes, and a reading comprehension portion with 36 questions in 51 minutes.

I prepared for about 6 weeks. The algebra section is where most applicants either win or lose their score. It covers basic algebra, functions, linear equations, and some geometry. None of it is advanced math - there's no calculus - but you need to be fast and accurate. I worked through about 400 practice problems over my prep period and timed myself strictly during the last 2 weeks. Speed matters because 46 minutes for 33 questions sounds reasonable until you hit problems that require multi-step work.

The reading comprehension section was honestly harder for me than the math even though I've always considered myself a strong reader. The passages are dense and technical - sometimes about electrical theory, sometimes safety procedures, sometimes completely unrelated topics. The questions require close reading and specific recall. I practiced with ASVAB reading passages because the format is similar and there's far more practice material available for that test than for NJATC specifically.

A few things I'd flag: make sure you're confident with fractions and negative numbers because those fundamentals came up in at least 8-10 algebra problems. Also the reading section has a strict time limit and I watched at least 3 people in my testing session run out of time. Pace yourself from question 1, don't let any single passage eat too much of your time.

Mine took about 10 weeks total from test date to acceptance letter. The interview happens in between and then there's a waiting period while they process everything and confirm class start dates. Six weeks is still early, hang in there.

8.5 out of 9 is an excellent score, congrats! The scoring gets combined into a ranking and a lot of locals use it to order applicants for interviews, so a high score helps you get picked up faster.

The algebra prep advice is spot on - I used Khan Academy for 8 weeks before my test and it made a real difference on the function notation questions specifically.

How long after your test did it take to get your acceptance letter? I took mine 6 weeks ago and I'm still waiting. My local said the process takes 8-12 weeks from test date but I'm getting anxious.

The ASVAB comparison for reading practice is really useful, I hadn't heard that before. There's tons of ASVAB prep material available and it makes sense to use it since finding NJATC-specific reading passages to practice with is nearly impossible.

Quick update for anyone following this thread: I've been grinding practice tests for about three weeks now and just hit a 7.8 on my last full mock run. Honestly wasn't expecting that jump so fast. The algebra section clicked once I stopped skipping the harder function problems and just forced myself through them.

I'm scheduled to sit the real thing in about two weeks. Feeling pretty solid on the math side but I'm still shaky on a few reading comprehension passages so that's where I'm spending the rest of my time. Thanks for posting this, your breakdown of the test structure is exactly what I needed to stop stressing and just focus.
