How I Finally Passed the NJ Bar After Failing Twice — What Actually Worked

I'm not going to sugarcoat it — I failed the NJ bar exam twice before I finally passed last July, and I want to share what actually made the difference because I spent so much time doing the wrong things. First two attempts I was doing passive reading, highlighting outlines, maybe 6-7 hours a day but not really testing myself. My MBE scores were hovering around 130 and my essay scores were all over the place.

What changed everything for me was shifting almost entirely to active recall and timed practice. I started doing at least 50 MBE questions every single day and writing out full essay answers under real time pressure. I also found that using a solid NJ BAR practice test set that mirrored the actual question style helped me understand where my gaps were — not just what topics I hadn't memorized, but how the questions were actually being asked.

Anyone else out there on their second or third attempt? Would love to hear what's working for people right now. My biggest weak spots were Contracts and Civil Procedure — NJ has some quirks that really tripped me up.

Can I ask what you did differently for the NJ-specific essay topics? That's what's killing me. The MPT feels manageable but the NJ essays on evidence and civil practice have stuff that isn't in any of the big commercial prep courses — at least not in enough depth. I've been trying to find supplemental NJ-specific outlines but it's kind of a mess out there. Also curious how many hours a day you were putting in the final 4 weeks before your passing attempt.

This really resonates with me. I'm on my first attempt studying right now and the sheer volume of material is overwhelming. I've been using a NJ BAR study guide that breaks things down by subject weight, which helped me stop treating every topic equally. Contracts, Torts, and Con Law together are like 40% of the MBE — once I realized that I stopped panicking about Secured Transactions every night. Timing yourself on essays is huge advice, I didn't start doing that until week 6 and wish I'd started day one.

Passed on my second attempt last February. Honestly the best NJ bar exam tip anyone gave me was to stop re-reading and start doing. I spent the last 3 weeks doing almost nothing but timed practice sets and writing essays cold. Brutal but it works. Your brain learns differently under pressure than it does reading quietly.
