How I Finally Passed the NJ Bar After Failing Twice — What Actually Worked
I'm not going to sugarcoat it — I failed the NJ bar exam twice before I finally passed last July, and I want to share what actually made the difference because I spent so much time doing the wrong things. First two attempts I was doing passive reading, highlighting outlines, maybe 6-7 hours a day but not really testing myself. My MBE scores were hovering around 130 and my essay scores were all over the place.
What changed everything for me was shifting almost entirely to active recall and timed practice. I started doing at least 50 MBE questions every single day and writing out full essay answers under real time pressure. I also found that using a solid NJ BAR practice test set that mirrored the actual question style helped me understand where my gaps were — not just what topics I hadn't memorized, but how the questions were actually being asked.
Anyone else out there on their second or third attempt? Would love to hear what's working for people right now. My biggest weak spots were Contracts and Civil Procedure — NJ has some quirks that really tripped me up.
