Finally passed NEAT after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I just got my results last week and I finally cleared the NEAT on my second try. First attempt I went in pretty confident after just reviewing my textbook notes and honestly got humbled — ended up about 12 points short of passing. The nutrition assessment sections completely caught me off guard.

What turned things around for me was being way more systematic. I spent about six weeks this time, roughly an hour a day, and focused heavily on using a solid NEAT study guide instead of trying to piece things together from random sources. I also did a ton of NEAT practice test questions — probably 400-500 total across different question banks — which really helped me get comfortable with how they phrase things, especially the client counseling scenarios.

For anyone just starting out: don't underestimate the scope of knowledge assessment and the behavioral change theory sections. Those tripped me up badly the first time. Happy to answer questions about the process if anyone is in prep mode right now.

This is so encouraging, thank you for sharing. I'm about three weeks out from my exam date and the behavioral change stuff is killing me — transtheoretical model, motivational interviewing, it's a lot to hold together. Did you find any specific NEAT exam tips for keeping that material straight? I keep mixing up the stages of change applications in case studies.

I passed on my first attempt but I'll second everything you said about practice questions. The wording on the actual exam is pretty specific and if you haven't seen that style before it'll throw you. I used a couple different practice test sets and honestly the ones that matched exam difficulty most closely were the ones that felt almost too hard during prep. If a question bank feels easy you're probably not ready yet.

Congrats! Six weeks at an hour a day sounds totally doable. I've been dreading how long this would take but that timeline makes it feel real. Bookmarking this thread for motivation when I start my prep next month.
