Finally passed the NCED after two attempts — here's what actually helped

So I just got my results back and I finally passed the NCED on my second try. First attempt I scored a 71 and needed a 75, which was honestly demoralizing. I spent about three months prepping this time around and I want to share what made the difference for people who are earlier in the process.

The biggest thing that changed my approach was actually working through a structured NCED practice test rather than just re-reading my notes. I'd been studying passively for months and not retaining anything. Once I started timing myself on practice questions — especially the sections on program development and ethics — I started to notice where my gaps actually were. The study guide I was using broke things down by domain, which helped me stop treating it like one giant undifferentiated blob of information.

My biggest weak spots were supervision models and the multicultural competency questions. Does anyone else find those especially tricky? Would love to hear what exam tips worked for people who've already cleared this thing. Happy to answer questions too — I remember how anxious I was the first time.

Congrats on passing! Supervision models killed me too on my first attempt. What helped me was writing out each model in my own words instead of just memorizing definitions — like actually explaining the difference between developmental and integrated models as if I was teaching someone. The ethics stuff I just drilled with timed practice questions until the logic felt automatic. Took me about 6 weeks of consistent daily study, maybe 45 minutes a night.

Which study guide did you end up using? I'm scheduled for the NCED in about 8 weeks and I'm honestly not sure if my current materials are cutting it. I've been going through the NBCC study materials but a friend told me the practice questions aren't representative of what actually shows up. Also curious how you handled the program evaluation domain — that one seems really broad to me and I can never tell how deep to go.

The multicultural competency section trips up a lot of people because the right answer isn't always the most obvious-sounding one — they really want you thinking through the counselor's role and self-awareness piece first. Trust that and you'll do fine. Congrats again!
