Finally passed my NCCER Core after failing twice, here's what worked

Okay so I'm not gonna sugarcoat it — I failed the NCCER Core exam twice before I finally passed last month. First time I went in basically cold, figured I'd done enough hands-on work on job sites that the written stuff would be fine. Wrong. Second time I bought some random PDF off eBay that was clearly outdated and didn't match the actual test at all. Waste of $15 and three weeks of my time.

What actually worked for third try was finding a decent NCCER practice test online that matched the current module format. I spent about two weeks, maybe 45 minutes a night, just grinding through practice questions on safety, hand tools, and basic electrical theory. Those three areas killed me both times before. Also grabbed a study guide that broke down the Blueprint Reading section because honestly that's where a lot of people trip up.

My score went from a 68 to an 81. Not perfect but I'll take it. If anyone's prepping right now, happy to share what resources I actually used. What modules are you guys struggling with most?

Man this is exactly what I needed to read today. I've got my test scheduled for three weeks out and the blueprint reading is killing me too. I keep mixing up the symbols. Did your study guide have practice drawings or was it mostly written explanations? I feel like I need to actually draw stuff out to make it stick rather than just read about it.

Congrats on passing! I took mine last year and the safety section caught me off guard — way more OSHA detail than I expected. My exam tips for anyone reading: don't skip the electrical safety questions even if you're going into pipefitting or carpentry. They pull from all the core modules regardless of your track. Took me about three weeks of studying, roughly an hour a day.

The blueprint section is no joke. I failed it on my first attempt specifically because of that. Second time I just focused on dimensions and elevation views for two solid weeks and went from a 61 to a 78 on that module alone. Don't sleep on it.
