Failed NBT twice — what finally worked for my third attempt?

So I've been putting off talking about this but I think it might help someone. I failed the NBT in November and again in February, both times by a pretty narrow margin. The first time I barely studied, figured I could wing it. The second time I did use a NBT practice test I found online but it was honestly outdated and nothing like the real thing. I scored a 61% on my own practice run and thought I was fine. I was not fine.

What actually turned things around for me was finding a proper study guide that broke down the quantitative literacy and academic literacy sections separately. I spent three weeks, about 45 minutes a day, just drilling those two areas specifically. The math isn't calculus-hard but the way questions are worded trips you up if you're not used to it.

My exam tips for anyone prepping: don't ignore the reading comprehension section thinking it's easy. That section cost me points both times. Anyone else been through multiple attempts? Happy to share more about what I used if it helps.

This is so relatable, honestly. I took mine last September and the reading section absolutely wrecked me. I went in thinking my English was strong enough to coast through but the passages they choose are dense and the questions are deliberately tricky. I ended up scoring 58 on my first go. Second attempt I dedicated two full weeks just to comprehension practice and bumped it to 74. The quantitative side was actually easier once I stopped panicking about it.

Timing killed me too on my first attempt. Once I started doing every single practice session with a strict timer it changed everything. Treat it like the real thing from day one — no pausing, no checking answers halfway through. That discipline alone probably added 8 points to my final score.

Can I ask which study guide you used? I've been finding so many conflicting resources and I can't tell which ones are actually updated to match the current NBT format. I'm writing in August and I want to make sure I'm not wasting time on something that doesn't reflect what's actually on the test. Also did you do timed practice or just work through questions without a clock? I feel like timing is where I always fall apart.
