Is the CMP actually recognized in the music industry? Worth getting for studio work?

Before I invest the time and money into prep for the music producer exam, I want to understand whether the CMP credential actually carries weight in professional circles. I'm a studio engineer looking to transition more into producing and I've asked around — most veteran producers I know have never heard of it. Is this a newer certification that's still building recognition, or is it well-established in certain markets?

My concern is spending months studying for a music production certification that hiring managers and label A&Rs don't recognize. The music industry has always been portfolio and relationship-driven, and I wonder if a certification competes with having a strong discography. On the other hand, if it helps with teaching positions at music schools or community colleges, that could be valuable for me.

I noticed the CMP certification guide positions it as validating technical and creative competencies for working professionals. That framing suggests education and corporate training contexts more than major label sessions. Anyone working in music education who's found the certified music producer credential useful in their job search?

From what I've researched, it's more valuable for music education roles than for landing production credits at major labels. If you're aiming for a teaching position at a recording school or community college, it adds legitimacy. For purely freelance production work, your portfolio still matters more.
