Acoustics section of the CMP was harder than expected — tips for recording techniques questions
I want to give a heads-up to anyone prepping for the CMP: the acoustics section surprised me with its depth. I expected a few basic questions about room treatment and standing waves, but the exam went into flutter echo, frequency absorption coefficients, diffusion vs absorption tradeoffs, and how room dimensions affect low-frequency buildup. If you're primarily a bedroom producer with limited studio design experience this section could be a weak point.
The audio recording certification content also covered mic polar patterns in depth — not just cardioid vs omnidirectional basics, but real-world applications: which pattern to use for a live room bleed problem, how a figure-8 mic behaves in a reflective space. These are questions that separate producers who've worked in real studio environments from those who haven't.
The CMP Acoustics and Recording Techniques practice quiz was genuinely the best preparation I found for this domain. It mirrors the difficulty level of the actual exam questions much better than any other resource I tried. If the music producer certification acoustics section worries you, start there and give yourself at least two weeks on this domain alone.
Good to know — I was planning to skim the acoustics domain since I've mostly worked in the box. Will dedicate more time to it now. Do the room modes questions require math calculations or are they conceptual? I'm hoping I don't need to memorize wavelength formulas.
The polar pattern questions caught me off guard too. I knew the basics but the situational questions — recording a string quartet in a reverberant room, which configuration minimizes bleed between instruments — required real applied thinking. Working through those practice quizzes multiple times helps build the right mental model.
