Anyone else studying for CMP in the next month? Want to study together
Taking my (CMP) Certified Music Producer exam in 3 weeks and trying to find people at a similar stage to keep each other accountable.
I study better when I have someone to compare notes with. Currently going through "cmp blood test" and working on my weak areas — specifically around cmp maine.
My schedule: 90 min of focused study every weekday, full practice test on weekends. I review every wrong answer and try to understand the why, not just memorize the right option.
If you're in a similar prep window and want to:
- Compare practice test scores weekly
- Share resources that actually helped
- Talk through confusing questions
Reply here or message me. Doesn't have to be formal — even just checking in once a week helps me stay on track.
Where is everyone at in their prep?
The CMP exam helped me understand what the exam actually tests rather than just what the material covers.
For what it's worth from someone who's been through it:
The CMP is one of those exams where the practice tests really do prepare you well. The style of questioning is pretty consistent. If you're comfortable with "cmp blood test" material under timed conditions, you'll be fine.
The one thing I'd add: read the question stems very carefully. They sometimes add a qualifier that completely changes the right answer and it's easy to miss when you're going fast.
Also check whether you need to schedule the exam in advance — some testing centers book up 2-3 weeks out.
For anyone finding this later: CMP is passable with consistent effort even working full time. I studied 47 minutes a day for 7 weeks. The cmp certification kept me honest about my actual gaps.
Great discussion. One thing nobody mentions: sleep the night before matters more than one more study session. Went in fully rested for my CMP and felt sharper than expected.
Appreciate everyone sharing their experience here. I'm 3 weeks out from my CMP exam date and feeling more confident after reading this. The consensus on cmp being the hardest section matches what I'm seeing in my practice scores — going to put extra time there this week.
Three weeks is honestly a solid window if you're already in the weeds on your weak spots. One thing that clicked for me was stop re-reading notes and start doing active recall drills specifically on production workflow sequences — things like signal chain order, licensing/clearance steps, and the business side of catalog management. The CMP loves to test those procedural sequences and it's way easier to blank on them under pressure than you'd think.
For the Maine-specific stuff, I'd carve out a separate list. State-level regulatory differences trip people up because they feel similar to general knowledge but have just enough variation to cost you points. I kept a sticky-note wall with just the state-specific outliers — sounds dumb but having them physically separate from everything else helped them stick.
Also, timed practice sets over long study sessions any day. Like, 20 questions, hard stop, then review every wrong answer before moving on. Killed my habit of skimming and moving on too fast. If you want a partner for timed sets over the next couple weeks I'm down — I test in about a month so the timing actually works.
