Finally passed my MTO exam after failing twice — here's what worked

Okay so I'm going to be real with you all — I failed the MTO knowledge test twice before I finally passed on my third attempt last month. The first time I just showed up thinking I could wing it (don't do this), and the second time I studied but used the wrong materials and got blindsided by questions about road signs I'd never even seen.

What actually turned things around for me was spending two weeks seriously grinding through an MTO practice test every single day. Not just doing them once and moving on — I'd redo the ones I failed until I was consistently hitting 85%+ before I felt ready. I also found a solid study guide that broke down the right-of-way rules in plain language, which was honestly my weakest area.

My exam tips for anyone in the same boat: don't underestimate the signs section, the pavement markings questions tripped up a lot of people in my test center that day. Give yourself at least 2-3 weeks of real studying. Anyone else have questions about what topics to focus on? Happy to share more about my prep routine.

This is so relatable. I failed my first attempt too and it was because I thought I knew the material just from driving for years. Big mistake. The actual exam has a lot of specific scenario-based questions that you just won't anticipate unless you've done practice tests. I used timed practice sessions to simulate the real pressure and that helped a ton. Passed on attempt two with a 91.

Can I ask how long your actual test took? I have mine booked for next Thursday and I'm nervous about the time limit. I've been going through a study guide but I feel like I keep second-guessing myself on the right-of-way questions especially when there's a pedestrian AND another vehicle involved at the same time. Do those kinds of multi-factor scenarios show up a lot?

The signs section got me too on my first try. Seriously recommend printing out the full sign chart and taping it somewhere you'll see it every day. Took me like a week of passive exposure before they really stuck. Good luck everyone — it's genuinely passable with the right prep!
