Failed MTLE twice — what finally helped me pass on third attempt?

I've been trying to get my Minnesota teacher license for almost two years now, and the MTLE has been the biggest roadblock. Failed the subtest twice by just a few points each time, which is honestly demoralizing when you're this close. My mentor suggested I was spending too much time rereading textbooks and not enough time doing timed practice under real conditions.

What finally clicked for me was switching to a structured MTLE practice test routine — doing full-length, timed sets three or four times a week instead of just reviewing content. I also found a decent study guide that broke down the Foundations of Reading subtest by competency, which helped me stop guessing which areas actually needed work. I'd been weak on phonemic awareness questions without even realizing it.

Wanted to share some exam tips that made a difference for me and also hear what strategies others used. Specifically curious if anyone found certain subtests harder than expected, or if the writing subtest format threw them off at first like it did me.

The phonemic awareness section got me too — way more nuanced than I expected coming from an elementary ed background. What helped me was drilling individual competencies instead of treating the whole test as one thing. I used a study guide that had me targeting specific standards, and my score jumped 14 points on the retake. Give yourself at least 8 weeks of consistent prep, don't rush it.

Third attempt success stories are so encouraging to read — congratulations! I'm sitting mine in six weeks and lowkey terrified. The exam tips about timed practice are exactly what I needed to hear. Bookmarking this thread.

Honestly the writing constructed response is what nearly tanked me. I kept running over time because I was trying to be too thorough. Someone in my cohort told me to practice hitting the key criteria in under 25 minutes and just stop. Sounds obvious but it wasn't to me. Did you use any MTLE practice test sets that included constructed response prompts, or mostly multiple choice prep?
