Finally passed MRP after two attempts — what actually worked for me

Okay so I've been lurking here for a while and figured I should give back since this community helped me so much. I passed the MRP exam last Thursday on my second try — first attempt I scored a 68 and needed a 70, which honestly felt devastating after two months of prep. The difference the second time was actually using a decent MRP practice test rather than just rereading the APICS textbook over and over.

My biggest mistake the first time was treating this like a memorization test. It's not. The questions are situational and they'll give you two answers that both sound right. What helped was working through scenario-based questions daily and forcing myself to understand WHY the wrong answers are wrong, not just flagging the right ones. I probably did 400+ practice questions in the six weeks before my second attempt.

If you're just starting out, find a solid MRP study guide that covers master scheduling and capacity requirements planning in depth — those sections were heavier on my exam than I expected. Happy to answer any specific questions about the process.

The two-wrong-answers-that-look-right thing is so real and nobody talks about it enough. My exam tips from a coworker who passed last year: always ask yourself what APICS would say in an ideal world, not what your company actually does. Real-world manufacturing experience can actually hurt you if you're too attached to how YOUR plant runs. Took me a while to unlearn some habits.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting for mine in about eight weeks and the capacity planning section is already killing me. Did you find the actual exam questions harder or easier than the practice ones you were doing? I've heard some people say the real test is way more straightforward than the prep materials make it seem, but I honestly can't tell if that's just people being modest after passing.

Second attempt success stories give me life right now. I failed by four points in March and I've been dreading signing up again. How long did you wait before rescheduling? I'm worried I'll lose momentum if I wait too long but also need time to actually fix my weak spots.
