Failed MPI exam twice — what finally worked for my third attempt?

I've been in the events industry for about six years and finally decided to get my MPI certification last year. Big mistake thinking I could wing it after the first attempt — I scored a 68 and needed a 75. Embarrassing, honestly, especially since I'd been doing this work for years. The problem wasn't experience, it was that the exam tests very specific knowledge in a very specific way.

For my second attempt I mostly just reread the CMP International Standards document and figured that'd be enough. Nope. Another 71. At that point I started actually looking for structured resources — found a decent MPI practice test online that helped me understand the question format way better than just reading. The phrasing on these questions is tricky, lots of "best answer" situations where two options seem right.

Third time I passed with an 82. My approach: daily practice questions for six weeks, a solid study guide covering all the domains, and I actually timed myself. Anyone else gone through multiple attempts? What clicked for you?

The timing piece is huge — I almost ran out of time on my first attempt because I kept second-guessing myself. What helped me most was treating every practice question as a learning opportunity, not just a score. When I got something wrong I'd look up why, not just move on. Also the Strategic and Financial Management domain tripped me up way more than I expected. That section is worth really digging into.

Six weeks of daily practice is the sweet spot in my experience. I did eight weeks and honestly the last two were just anxiety at that point — I'd already peaked. Trust the process and stop cramming the night before. Sleep matters more than one more practice run.

Congrats on passing! I'm currently prepping for mine and honestly the exam tips I keep seeing about "think like a CMP, not like yourself" are so real. My real-world instincts keep leading me to answers that sound practical but aren't technically correct per the standards. How long did you spend studying each day? I'm doing about 45 minutes but wondering if that's enough with an 8-week timeline.
