Failed my MOT exam twice — what finally helped me pass

So I finally passed my MOT certification last week after failing twice before, and I wanted to share what actually made the difference. My first two attempts I was just reading the manual cover to cover and hoping stuff would stick. Big mistake. The emissions and lighting sections especially kept tripping me up — there's so much nuance in the defect categories that a straight read-through doesn't prepare you for.

What finally clicked was switching to a structured MOT study guide approach and doing timed practice questions every single day for three weeks. I started recognizing patterns in how questions are worded, especially around the difference between dangerous, major, and minor defects. That distinction alone probably accounts for a quarter of the questions.

Anyone else here working toward their MOT? Curious what study methods people are using. My third attempt I scored 87%, which felt amazing after two fails. Happy to share more about my timeline or the specific topics that gave me the most trouble.

The defect category thing is so real — I almost failed because I kept second-guessing whether something was major or dangerous. What helped me was doing MOT practice test questions specifically focused on that section. After about 200 practice questions I stopped overthinking it. Also, don't neglect the steering and suspension questions. They feel straightforward but there are some really specific torque and wear tolerance details that can catch you off guard.

87% is a solid score, well done. One exam tip I'd add — read every question twice before answering. I nearly dropped marks on a few questions that had double negatives buried in them. The wording can be sneaky.

Congrats on passing! I'm sitting mine in about six weeks and honestly a bit nervous. How long did you spend studying each day during those three weeks? I've been doing maybe 30 minutes but wondering if that's enough. Also did you find the actual exam harder or easier than the practice materials? I always worry the real thing throws curveballs that the practice tests don't cover.
